A number of 40-year \'\'Macross\'\' design sketches by Shoji Kawamori are gathered here! This book aims to collect as many rough sketches as possible related to the \'\'Macross\'\' series by director Shoji Kawamori (hereinafter referred to as Mr. Kawamori), and to publish as many and as large as possible. There is probably no other book published in a single series with such a number of pages, with only preparatory manuscripts as the main. Such rough sketches were often omitted or treated small in existing books and magazines. This is because these sketches are just preparatory sketches, and some designers may hesitate to show their unfinished ones to their fans. However, Mr. Kawamori\'s rough sketch seemed to be valuable as a work (or illustration) in itself, so we at the GA Graphic editorial department took the plunge and launched the project for this book. Rough sketches have a mysterious charm. It is natural that the setting picture has the beauty that was completed as a drawing material, but in addition to the one that represents the final shape, you can see the preparatory manuscript with innumerable \'\'lines\'\' with potential. There is power that cannot help attracting people unconsciously. There are various processes and twists and turns leading up to the final draft, and one of the reasons is that you can see it from the preparatory draft. It is the final draft as a result of not only the hard work of the designer who was worried about it, but also the opinions and corrections of other staff involved in building the world view of the work, and the requests from the products and sponsors. In the \'\'Macross\'\' series, which was created mainly by Mr. Kawamori, the existence of rough sketches as described above has a different meaning from that of countless other works. That is, Mr. Kawamori himself is the creator of the work world, and he is in a position to discretion the world view and the direction of development that may be influenced by the design.
